United College, Lambung, Chandel, was established on the 18th February, 1980 as a private college after prominent leaders, chiefs of surrounding villages and public leaders of Chandel district, Manipur, came together to address the long felt and growing need of an institution of higher education in Chandel which would provide opportunity to students of the district to fulfill their wish to study further after passing Matriculation.

Chandel, being the most backward of all the hill districts of Manipur, was also pitifully far behind in educational sphere. The standard of existing schools left much to be desired and the lack of college education facilities in the district compounded matters further. Most students could not go beyond Standard X (ten). It was under such a compelling situation that United College was established.

United College began catering to the educational needs of the students upto Higher Secondary level initially. In 1987, the college was granted Temporary Affiliation by the Manipur University. Permanent affiliation was accorded to the College in 1995 vide the Syndicate Resolution No.15/131, thereby including the college under the sections 2(f),12(b) of the University Grants Commission Act of 1956 on 13th November, 1995.

Under the relentless efforts of the erstwhile Governing body headed by Shri (L) Ht. Thungam, Hon'ble ExMinister, as its founder Chairman, the United College was permitted to add Degree Classes in Arts and was granted 90 Recurring GrantinAid by the Rishang Keishing Government vide order No.6/9/84S/HE dated the 30th March, 1987. On 1st June, 1996, the college was converted into fullfledged Government Degree College again during the Hon'ble Chief Ministership of Shri. Rishang Keishing. Shri BD Behring, Hon'ble ExMP/MLA, was the then Chairman of the Governing Body under whose tireless initiatives the aspirations of the leaders, general public and student community to have a fullfledged Government Degree college in the District came to fruition.

United College has seen tremendous growth along the years. From a humble beginning it has earned the envious distinction of being the first NAAC accredited college in the hill districts of Manipur at the B Level (71.05). The College is now poised to rise to the demands of the students in the field of higher education with the assistance of the Government of Manipur, University Grants Commission (UGC), North Eastern Council (NEC). Currently, preparations for NAAC Reaccreditation is in the final stages of completion.
